The Threepennyopera by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill and its famous “Mack the knife” have been performed and covered by many artists over the last more than 100 years, including Dee Dee Bridgewater, Michael Bublé, Duke Ellington, Nick Cave, Christopher Lee, Frank Sinatra, Sting, Robbie Williams, Brian Setzer and many more, leading to an illustrious list of different musical styles and interpretations. However, there is also one recording by Bertold Brecht himself, singing “mack the knife” in 1929. Whilst you would probably not call him a great singer, his version most certainly has a very eerie feel to it and seems to be very much in line with the original productions of the Threepennyopera. Unfortunately, the audio quality of this recording is not the best either, but I think it is recording well worth listening to – enjoy!
